Some of these cells amplify the sound that enters the ear, while others convert sound waves into electrical signals and spread to the brain. Dr. Ronna Hertzano, associate professor of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at UMSOM, and Dr. Maggie Matern, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, demonstrated that this protein called GFI1 is essential for determining whether embryonic hair cells mature into functional adult hair cells, or become more like functional adult hair cells.
